READ Students Make History

Students in READ’s 2008 reading
programs have completed the most
successful year in READ’s history! These
students, who were reading below grade
level and at risk for falling behind in
school, achieved an average of a 1.2
grade level increase in reading. Seventy-one
percent of students improved at
least one full grade level in their reading
skills, which marks the highest
percentage of students who have reached
this benchmark since READ’s inception.
In addition to historical reading gains,
READ continues to expand its services to
children and teens. In 2008, READ served
nearly 2,400 children and teens across 38
elementary schools in all five boroughs
of New York City.

...Children read
Emily Paul, a former READ student who is now in the fourth grade, achieved a perfect score on the New
York State 3rd grade English Language Arts test! Emily was identified in 1st grade as having difficulty
learning to read. READ commends her progress and applauds her teachers, school, and family members,
who have all contributed to her growing literacy skills.
